This, Too, Shall Pass Away

When some great sorrow, like a mighty river,
Flows through your life with peace-destroying power
And dearest things are swept from sight forever,
Say to your heart each trying hour:
"This, too, shall pass away."
When ceaseless toil has hushed your song of gladness,
And you have grown almost too tired to pray,
Let this truth banish from your heat its sadness,
And ease the burdens of each tring day:
"This, too, shall pass away."
When fortune smiles, and, full of mirth and pleasure,
The days are flitting by without a care,
Lest you should rest with only earthly treasure,
Let these few words their fullest import bear:
"This, too, shall pass away."
When earnest labor brings you fame and glory,
And all earth's noblest ones upon you smile,
Remember that life's longest, grandest story
Fills but a moment in earth's little while:
"This, too, shall pass away."
슬픔이 감당할 수 없는 큰 강물처럼 밀려와
너의 삶을 찢어놓고 사랑하던 것들을 쓸어가 버릴 때,
애쓰는 그대 가슴에 대고 이렇게 말하자
"이것 또한 지나가리라."
끝없는 고생으로 즐거움을 잃어버리고
이젠 더 이상 기도할수도 없을 만큼 지쳤을 때,
이 진실의 말이 그대를 슬픔과
중압감으로부터 헤어날 수 있도록 이야기하자
"이것 또한 지나가리라."
행운이 미소를 지어 기쁨과 환희가 가득하고
아무 걱정 없는 날들이 스쳐 지나갈 때면,
세속적인 것에만 그대가 의지하지 않도록
이 말을 가슴 깊이 새기도록 하자
"이것 또한 지나가리라."
정직한 노력이 명성과 영광을 가져다주고
세상 고귀한 사람들이 다 그대를 알아줄 때에도
가장 멋진 이야기는 단지 세상의 한귀퉁이를
잠시 동안만 채울 뿐이란 것을 기억하자.
"이것 또한 지나가리라."
